House panel to consider requiring DNA samples after arrests
|
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Anyone arrested on a felony charge that
carries at least five years in prison may soon have to provide a
DNA sample.
The House Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would expand
the state's DNA database yesterday.
Currently anyone convicted of a felony must give a DNA sample.
The House bill would require people arrested on serious crimes
to give up a sample before they went to trial.
The information would be removed from the state database if the
individual is later cleared.
The Senate approved the bill in January.
