SC House approves $7B budget that still needs compromise
|
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina House has approved the
state's $7 billion budget, but officials will likely have to find
more money to get children to school.
Education officials say $21 million put in the plan to cover
higher fuel costs isn't enough to pay for diesel fuel with prices
stubbornly rising above $4 a gallon.
The only way to get more money for fuel now is with a two-thirds
vote of both the House and the Senate.
Education Department spokesman Jim Foster says every eight-cent
per gallon increase in diesel means the agency spends $1 million
more fueling its buses.
