Greenville, SC, April 29, 2008 - In celebration of Flag Day, former political cartoonist and SC author Kate Salley Palmer will do a storytime reading of her children's book Palmetto: Symbol of Courage (Warbranch Press, paperback, $10.95) at Fiction Addiction on Saturday, June 14th at 11am and then will sign copies of her books from 11:30-1 pm.
Kate wrote Palmetto: Symbol of Courage to teach South Carolina children the story of the palmetto tree and its importance to South Carolina. The book describes the Revolutionary War battle at Sullivan's Island that earned the palmetto tree its place of pride on the South Carolina flag.
Kate's other books include Francis Marion and the Legend of the Swamp Fox, The Pink House, A Gracious Plenty, and Growing Up Cartoonist in the Baby-Boom South.
 
Book author and illustrator is a second career for Kate Salley Palmer. In 1978, she became South Carolina's first full-time political cartoonist when she was hired by The Greenville News. While a cartoonist at the News, Kate was one of three women members of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists, won the National Freedom Foundation's Principal Award for Editorial Cartoonists, and was syndicated nationally in over 200 newspapers by News America Syndicate.
