Deputies Shoot Accused Purse Snatcher, K-9 injured

TAYLORS, S.C. -- Greenville County Sheriff's deputies shot the man wanted in connection with a Monday purse-snatching at a Greer grocery store.
According to Lt. Shea Smith, deputies found 34-year-old Jerry Davis sleeping in a car on Carver Road in Taylors, just off St. Mark Road.
A deputy had heard that Davis had been known to frequent the area and was on patrol when he saw him sleeping in a car. The deputy called for backup and once officers were in place, they woke Davis up. As the deputy was trying to serve the warrants on Davis, he poured gas on himself, threatened deputies with a butcher knife and began to run away.
As Davis ran away, deputies released a K-9 unit to take him down. Deputies said Davis turned around and stabbed the dog as it was stopping him. That's when deputies opened fire on Davis, wounding him.
The dog, named Kroc, was taken to a veterinary clinic where he was expected to recover from his injuries, Smith said.
Davis was flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery. Smith said Davis was expected to recover from his injuries.
According to warrants, Davis is accused of standing on a toilet to reach a victim's purse as it hung from a stall door in the bathroom of a Bi-Lo on Hudson Road. The warrant said that Davis then struck the victim with the car he was driving, during his getaway.
