Russ and Lisa

Russ & Lisa is one of The Upstate’s most popular radio programs. Russ and Lisa argue, joke and play with each other and with you weekday mornings from 6 to 10. This is the only show in our area you can trust to give you the right point of view, the best news, traffic and weather and a good laugh on the way to work.

Russ Cassell
Russ Cassell is one of The Upstate’s greatest exports. As a voice over artist, Russ is in great demand around the country to read commercials. Russ is a father of 3, a husband of one, and dogfather to 2 pooches.

RUSS' E-MAIL OF THE DAY:

Russ,

I listened to your show this morning and I heard someone mention giving a donation to Hazleton for the legal defense expenses. I thought what a great idea!

So I called them and they directed me to their defense fund website. Here is the link.  http://www.smalltowndefenders.com/public/

Money can be sent to :
City of Hazleton Legal Defense Fund, c/o Mayor Lou Barletta
City Hall, 40 N. Church St., Hazleton, PA 18201

We could all send money there, but I have a better idea.  Wouldn't it be great if we knew how much money the upstate donated, or at least WORD listeners?  Why don't you try to put a donation drive/fund raiser together and we can do this together and feel good about doing something. Right now all we feel is shock and frustration at the entire thing.  We need more than just you behind this. All WORD shows should join the fund raising efforts. Maybe Mike Gallagher would want to join our efforts.

We need to fund them as well as the ACLU is funded ?  Or what ever those communists are called.

One other thing, please always refer to China as communist china. Also it is so interesting that we can trade with communist China but not with communist Cuba? What is the difference?  They are equal. You can thank President Clinton for the huge trade deficit with communist china.  Sorry but I feel that is all true.
Keep up the good work!!

Brent in Spartanburg,  Pauline to be more specific.

Lisa Rollins
For more than 30 years Lisa Rollins has been a part of upstate radio. Called the most calming, caring, conservative voice in radio, Lisa started in the business, after graduating from Massey College in Atlanta and attending speciality classes in Advertising and Broadcast at Georgia Tech.

The Greenville native worked her internship in Atlanta but missed home, and returned during Spring Break to apply for a job. Her favorite radio station at the time was WQOK, a top 40 monster known as "The Big Q"! She was hired to start the next week and has been radio-active ever since that first day in the early 70's.

After working at WQOK for more than 10 years, she was hired to start the New Rock 101 in Anderson. She managed the station as Office Manager while writing commercials and doing voice work for the station and for a number of radio and TV stations statewide and nationally. After working there for almost a decade, the station was sold, and she decided to get out of the business and stay at home for her husband and kids...She has 2...(not husbands) but, a daughter and son!

The stay at home routine didn't last, Lisa was courted by several stations both in and out of state, but since she became addicted to Talk radio and when she was approached by WFBC-am, now known as WORD-WYRD, she couldn't refuse! She joined WFBC in 1991 and has been there ever since. She calls it the best move she ever made! And so do others since she has been honored for her work in a number of areas.

Lisa has won several awards for writing commercials, for voice work, and for her unlimited passionate work with public service organizations. She is listed in Who's Who, named the first and only Auxiliary member of The South Carolina Veterans Service Corps, honored by the Marine Corps League, and honored as The GOP Woman of the Month a number of times. She has spoken to an array of groups including Lions Clubs, Churches, at various conventions including Billy Graham's The Cove, Christian Leadership Retreat. She served on the Attorney General's Marriage and Family Foundation and is involved with Heritage Community Services on the Abstinence Only Program Board.

Lisa has worked a number of pageants, talent shows, fashion shows, and awards banquets. She has served as emcee for Political panels, forums, and discussion groups. Actively involved in politics, but, more actively involved in her church-Brookwood Church in Simpsonville where she has been a member for a number of years.

She has been a part of our lives from being the one to tell us everything first...from the death of Elvis to the shuttle explosion...from the 9-11 attacks to Katrina. From Columbine to Virginia Tech. Lisa is trusted for her professionalism and appreciated for her community concern. Speaking of which, Lisa spear-headed a convoy of trucks to take in supplies to some of the hardest hit areas of the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. Yes, riding on an 18 wheeler and delivering everything from diapers to dog food. She arrived after the non-stop road trip just in time to make more than 100 sandwiches to feed those waiting in line, and personally hand out supplies with the help of several local volunteers who went along with her.

Lonzo

Lonzo's road to radio has been a very rocky and winding trek. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, his football career came to an end in college after total knee reconstruction. With gridiron dreams ended Lonzo took many jobs in retail, but after his fifth place of employment went out of business he decided to go to recording school.  Graduating in the top 1 percent of his class he set off to find a job in the recording industry or at least a temporary radio gig.
Lonzo's family had a chance to move to South Carolina and while his wife Lisa was looking for a job, he saw a radio station in the same building. Resume' in hand he walked into WPEK 98.1 and received an interview on the spot. He was hired that day and started out board opping Atlanta Braves baseball. A year later he had worked his way into producing the morning show as well as a sports show on Saturday. The Saturday sport show was called Sports Saturday with Stan Olenik and it was here where Lonzo got his first taste of on air participation, talking about football.
Lonzo worked at the Peak for 4 years, until the station was sold, and the format was changed. Three days later he landed at News Radio WORD 1330/950 AM producing the Ralph Bristol show. Working various shifts throughout his 6 plus years at WORD, he is now producing the Russ and Lisa show in the morning, and has been for several years.

Lonzo is now the Executive Producer for WORD, morning producer, and the co-host of THE WARMUP SHOW during football season. He is a husband and a proud father of two beautiful children (Kameron and Ravynn) who participate in every sport and extracurricular activity known to man. He is the lead singer for a Christian Rock band, songwriter, and an aspiring author.

Like many who got into radio temporarily, Lonzo has found that after 10 years, this radio thing might have a future!

Local Weather - Dr. Joe Sobel

Dr. Joe Sobel knows The Upstate’s weather better than anyone on radio. Dr. Joe is the head of the Forensic Department at AccuWeather. Joe received his B. S. in meteorology from the University of Michigan and his M. S. and Ph.D. from Penn State. Dr. Joe is usually right on the inexact meteorological sciences that make The Upstate such a challenge to forecast.
